The Week in Review

February 6, 2011

This was a really odd week. I am looking forward to starting a new one.

Wednesday, as I told you earlier, I was snowed in. Thursday I planned to return to work, but my car was stuck in ice and snow and I couldn’t get it moved. Fortunately, all of my appointments that day were online so my supervisor allowed me to work from home.

Friday morning I still couldn’t get the car out, but my amazing friend who fortunately had the day off from work offered to be my personal driver. So I made it into the office and didn’t miss teaching. After work, we finally got my car out. Yay! I am happy to be mobile again.

Today I did some reading for class, made some more potato soup, and went to a friend’s new place for a small party.

Overall, this was not a very exciting week. I am looking forward to getting back to my regular routine!

Back in the Springfield Groove

January 26, 2011

That doesn’t have quite the same ring as New York Groove, but it’s all I’ve got.

I’ve been back for a week now and things are already starting to pick up with my own classes. Work is still rather slow; I don’t have my first appointments until next week.

Last semester was all about writing; this one looks to be all about reading. I still have a fair amount of writing to accomplish by the end of the semester, but the amount of weekly reading could be quite overwhelming if I thought about it too much. Instead, I just take it one book at a time, one day at a time. Focusing on the day-to-day keeps me from freaking out about the big picture. This week I had 622 pages to read for my Wednesday class. I wondered how I’d finish it on time, but instead I finished Monday evening, giving me all day today to read for another class. Somehow, it all gets done.

It would be easy for me to say that I got it all read so quickly because I did nothing else, but that would not be true either. In the past five days I’ve gone to the gym four times, baked pizza crust and cinnamon rolls, gone shopping, and stayed current with my tv shows. Oh, and let’s not forget I’ve also kept up with washing dishes, which is where I usually fall behind first.

All in all, a good start to the semester.

I Refuse to Turn on the Heat

October 27, 2010

It’s interesting how conscious you become of such things when you have to pay your own utilities bill. Tomorrow night’s low is supposed to be 29 so I’m not sure how much longer I can keep this up. Fortunately, I have plenty of sweaters, blankets, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate to keep me warm.

Right now I am supposed to be reading for my historiographical essay, but I am very unmotivated. The draft is due two weeks from tonight. It is supposed to be 10-12 pages and have at least 20 sources. I don’t think actually writing it will be too difficult, but getting through all the sources is going to take some time. I’ve only looked at about 5 so far.

This past weekend was wonderful. My mom came to visit; it was great finally having a visitor! It was the perfect weekend for her to come too because I had relatively less homework than usual (i.e., only one paper instead of two and comparatively less reading). We saw Red, went shopping, and visited the Lincoln Presidential Museum. Even though I still did some homework over the weekend, it felt like a sort of mini break. I think I needed that because the rest of the semester is going to be a marathon.

It’s already time to register for next semester’s classes or will be on Monday. The history department in all its wisdom scheduled two required classes at precisely the same time, so I am in the process of finding out if I can take one of them as an independent study. I really hope I can do that. Not only would it allow me to take both of those requirements sooner rather than later, but I would also only have to be actually in class twice a week. Crossing my fingers this works out!

What have you been up to? I love comments; talk to me!

Odd and Ends

October 18, 2010

Just a quick update: I finally changed the banner to reflect the current season. I also did a much-needed update of my blogroll.

I did not make it to my second paper today as I am still doing the reading for it. Looks like my marathon writing session will most likely take place on Tuesday.

It’s Friday!

Don’t you just love the weekend?

I think I’ve already covered my major goals for this weekend in previous posts. I’m just hoping I stick to them.

My mattress is getting delivered tomorrow morning. I am so, so excited to sleep on a real bed again. I figured out a way to make the sofa a little more comfortable, but 5 nights on that would be a bit much for anyone.

Today was a fairly short day at work. I got trained in using the online scheduler and then I typed up and turned in my work plan. I also found out some more activities I will get to work on throughout the semester in addition to the ones I already knew about. I’m a little nervous about actually starting this job–after all, it does consist of a lot of things I have never done before at all. But for exactly that same reason I am very excited about it. The things that I will be doing are experiences that I want to have and skills I want to develop. I feel they will make me more well-rounded and complement quite well the skills I have already garnered through past jobs. It will be a learning process for sure, but I think I am up to the challenge.

I would like to put some pictures up in my office, but unfortunately I left all of my prints back at home. I knew I didn’t want them in my apartment and I didn’t even think about bringing them for my office. Labor Day is soon though so I will try to remember to pick them up then.

Today six of my school books arrived from Amazon. Originally I purchased my books from the campus bookstore because I thought I had checked and determined the prices were not that different from ordering online. However, once I looked more closely, I realized I could save myself a ton of money ordering through Amazon.

Also today, my headboard arrived from I was going to put it together tonight, but, sadly, one of the pieces is cracked. I already ordered a replacement part though so hopefully it won’t take too long to come.

Tonight for dinner I made myself a grilled veggie sandwich with hummus. It was delicious. If I get my act together tomorrow I may make homemade pizza crust. I have never made it before so wish me luck.

It’s All Coming Together

August 19, 2010
  • This afternoon I finally got my clothes put away and my closet organized. I love my closet here. It is very spacious and I have room for everything.
  • Tomorrow’s after-work activity is going to be organizing my desk. Once that’s done everything will be in its place and I can begin the fun activity of decorating.
  • Tonight I made the most delicious smoothie ever: frozen mango, pineapple, and berries with rice milk and peanut butter. So amazing!
  • Tomorrow is the last day of orientation for my job, though there are still a few training activities to be completed over the next week or so.
  • I’m hoping to make the most of this weekend–my last real “free” weekend before classes begin and my job starts for real. I want to do some cooking/baking. In particular, I want to make things that can be frozen for later when I have less time.

It’s the Start of Something . . .

August 17, 2010
  • Yesterday I officially moved into my new place. I really like it, but it’s going to take me a while to adjust to being somewhere new with no one else I know. Last night was hard, but today has been easier.
  • Today was my first day of training for my new job. So far, so good. It seems like a good place to work with good people. I definitely think that as I learn more about it and get comfortable in my role I will enjoy it.
  • My kitchen and living room are officially organized. I do want to buy some decorative things for the living room though because it looks a little sparse right now.
  • I still have not tackled unpacking my clothes. I really hate unpacking. Plus, I think I have a mental block about organizing my bedroom before my bed arrives, even though it would probably be helpful to have that all done before the delivery.
  • I have set myself the deadline of having everything unpacked by Sunday night. Hopefully it will be done sooner than that, but I definitely want everything in its place before classes start.
  • Once said classes start I know my free time will become virtually non-existent so these last few days before then are for (in addition to setting up the apartment) reading, catching up on blogs (I have 432 unread posts in Google Reader right now), and watching tv for the heck of it.
  • I will try to have pictures of my place early next week!
